About Us
Our Mission
Wyoming Positives For Positives provides information and
referral services to doctors, dentists, and other health care providers as well as local
businesses that are postive-friendly. We also participate in a medication redistribution
program that provides HIV medications to people who cannot otherwise access these
therapies. The agency's mission is twofold:
1. To provide support and services for those persons critically ill with HIV disease, and;
2. To provide information and education resources focusing on the prevention, detection,
and effective treatment of HIV/AIDS to health care providers, persons infected and
affected with HIV/AIDS and the general public.
Our History
Wyoming Positives For Positives was founded as a community-based
HIV/AIDS service organization in May 1993 by Jeff Palmer to help address the needs of
HIV-positive Wyomingans for HIV care, treatment, and prevention, as well as to educate
health care providers in a predominantly rural setting. He was a true pioneer in
advocating for the rights of people living with or at risk for HIV, including those who
were incarcerated or who battled addictions that increased their risk. He was never afraid
of a good fight when people's needs hung in the balance, and he won a great many more than
he lost.
Jeff provided the direction and guiding spirit
for the work of the agency from its most humble beginnings from the back of a trailer to
its brick-and-mortar evolution. The agency came to provide a wide variety of services over
the years, including outreach and prevention, HIV counseling and testing, a Lectures and
Speakers program geared to health care provider education, and a quarterly newsletter with
a top circulation of over 12,000 with readers in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and 47 other
nations.
Jeff passed away at the age of 59 on Monday,
Oct. 3, 2005 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. His wife
Catherine, his sister Joan and his mother Shirley were among the family members taking
care of him during his last days.
In the months since Jeff's passing the Board of
Directors have been working to ensure the continued operations of the organization that
Jeff's passion created and sustained for so long. The new office location and the
rennovated web site are part of that effort. As we continue to move forward we invite and
encourage the community's participation and input. |
